1006-2. There is an exception which. allows 8 inches (203
and 9 inches (229 mm) for the rise and run, respectively, for
stairways serving an occupant load of less than 10 and
,occupied roofs. This exception may not be warranted, as
:all see. The rise and run figures for the steps were new for

They are based on safety in descending stairs and are the
of a great amount of research. Probably at no prior time in

quently, the rise and run of steps has been based on com-
ascending stairs. In fact, one of the reasons given by the

It is of interest to note that the former figures for riser height
and tread run of 71/2 inches (191 mm) and 10 inches (254 mm),
respectively, had been in the U.B.C. since the first edition in
1927. Until recent years, these dimensions satisfied all of the
rules commonly in use for stairway geometry. The rules most of-
ten applied were:
• The riser height plus tread run shall not be less than 171/2
or greater than 18.
• Twice the riser height plus the tread tun shall not be less
than 24 or greater than 25.
• The product of the riser height and the tread run shall not
be less than 70 or greater than 75.
• Maximum pitch angle is 37 degrees.
It may be of particular interest to note that the second rule was
originated by a French architect in the seventeenth centu y.3
