HomeMy WebLinkAbout07 July NewsletterNewsletterNewsletter July 2017 A Note from the Mayor: Speak to Your City: Participate in Our Resident Survey This month we are excited to launch a survey for residents to help City Hall broaden and improve the ways we share information. Your voice is crucial in this process and we want to hear from you about how we are doing. Ultimately, the City works most effectively when residents know what we are working on and how they can make their voices heard. Your participation will help us better keep you informed and provide easier opportunities for you to speak out on the issues that matter to you most. We’d love to hear from you. Summer is here and people like to gather with loved ones outisde and hang out around the backyard fire pit. Please be mindful of your neighbors, they might not have the same feelings about wood smoke entering their yards and homes. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), wood smoke is a complex mixture of gases and microscopic particles. When these microscopic particles get into your eyes and respiratory system, they can cause health problems such as burning eyes, runny nose, and bronchitis. The EPA has a Burn Wise program that advises using only properly dried wood, because wet wood can create excessive smoke. To allow wood to properly dry, stack wood away from buildings on rails in a single row with the split side down. Cracked ends on the wood typically means its dry enough to burn. For more inforamtion about the Burn Wise program visit: https://www.epa.gov/burnwise. HUGE THANKS to major event partners! July • Page 2 Did you know that both residential and commercial properties in the City of Port Townsend are required to have garbage service through the City’s solid waste contractor, DM Disposal? Garbage service is so necessary for the preservation of public health that the City has regulated disposal of garbage since its incorporation. Ordinance No. 14, adopted April 20, 1878, imposed a fine of between five and twenty dollars for improper disposal of “birds, fish, bones, or any description of carrion or garbage.” Requiring garbage service of all developed properties does two things: by providing for a systematic method of disposing of garbage, it protects public health by reducing the risk of vermin and disease; and, it keeps costs for everyone down by providing a predictable revenue stream both for the contractor and for the County’s waste transfer utility. You may read more about the City’s requirements in PTMC 6.04.040(A) online: http://www.codepublishing.com/WA/PortTownsend/If you don’t have active garbage service for your property, you may establish service by contacting DM Disposal at: (360) 385-6612. Dumping trash in commercial bin or putting your trash in another home’s bin or in a dumpster owned by a business, without the owner’s permission is illegal – if you are caught you could be fined. July • Page 3 360.379.5047 • citycouncil@cityofpt.us • www.cityofpt.us AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE WASTEWATER UTILITY Weather you flush it, pour it, or dump it down the drain or toilet, sewage (wastewater) doesn’t just go away. Whatever goes down your sewer system comes back around in some way. Fats, oil, and grease (FOG) can lead to sewer backups and overflows which can cause health hazards, damage to home interior and threaten the environment, and also cause the utility department to perform more maintenance on the system than would be otherwise required. Here are some other items that should not go down the drain or be flushed down the toilet: • Diapers - cloth, disposable, flushable • Facial tissues • Baby wipes, disinfectant wipes, moist wipes, etc. • Toilet bowl scrub pads • Swiffers • Napkins - paper or cloth, paper towels • Dental floss • Egg shells, nutshells and coffee grounds • Fats, oils, and greases • Hair • Sanitary napkins, tampons, condoms or any non-organic material • Vitamins, medicines or other pharmaceuticals • Wash cloths, towels, rags (any cloth item) • Clothing • Sheet plastic or plastic of any kind • Aquarium gravel or kitty litter • Food items containing seeds and peelings • Fruit Labels The Wastewater Division Thanks You for helping us keep the sewer collection and wastewater treatment systems trouble free. Keeping Your Toilet Bowl Lid Down Our sanitary sewer jet-cleaning machine uses high-pressure water to clean the sanitary sewer system. This high water pressure may affect your home's sanitary sewer plumbing. You may experience gurgling or bubbling water in the toilet bowl or, in rare cases, splash out of the bowl. The water that could come from this type of incident is from the bowl itself. The common causes of air venting into homes during sanitary sewer cleaning are: air movement from normal cleaning operations, the use of higher pressure needed when cleaning sanitary sewer lines that have a steep slope, sewer lines running close to the building, a plugged roof vent, and the size and complexity of the home’s wastewater ventilation system. So, to minimize water splashing out of your toilet bowl, make it a habit to keep the lid down. You may smell sewer gas from your basement floor drains and other fixtures. If this does occur, flush your toilet and pour water into your floor drains and sinks. Sanitary sewer cleaning does not damage your sewer system. The water that comes out is the water that is normally in the home's system (drain traps), not the water from the sanitary sewer in the street.
