PLAN REVIEW MEMORANDUM
TO: Jan Zimmer, Plans Tech
FR: Tom Aumock, Asst. Fire Chief
DT: 13 May 2003
RE: BLD03-080, Sorgen, 824 Water Street, Sprinkler System
This department is in receipt of the set of plans for the above-referenced proposal from your office.
The above-reference proposal was reviewed by this department relative to the Uniform Fire Code
[U.F.C.], 1997 Edition, and the following constitutes this department's findings and determinations based
upon the plans of record submitted.
Findin>;s & Determinations:
1. The proposal was reviewed as a Group R transient accommodation occupancy with a Type V-N
construction classification for the second floor of the subject structure; and,
• 2. The department recommends approval of a request for use of the domestic water supply which is
allowed under the provisions of UFC Section 1003.1.1 Exception No.2, which reads
Automatic sprinkler systems may be connected to the domestic water-supply main when approved
by the building official. provided the domestic supply is of adequate pressure, capacity and sizing
for the combined domestic and sprinkler requirements. In such case, the sprinkler system connection
shall be made between the public water main or meter and the building shutoff valve, and there
shall not be intervening valves or connections. [with the exception of the mandated DDC valve noted in
item No. 6 below)
3. The automatic fire sprinkler system is found to be designed by a licensed technician (W.A.C. 212-80,
Level II). The basis for design was not found on the plan set, none the less, the design provisions of
Uniform Building Code Standard 9-1 and related sections shall apply, and;
4. A complete set of as-built drawings of the system shall be filed for record with this department if
changes are made to the permit set, and;
5. A pressure reduction valve may be required by the UPC for the sprinkler main as it appears that the
static water supply pressure exceeds 80 psi, and;
6. Back-flow prevention shall be accomplished by the following devices, unless determined otherwise
by the Cityof Port Townsend Water Dept., and in the order of City preference [residential single-
check valves are not allowed]
- Double check-valve assembly--DCVA
- Double check detector assembly-- DCDA
