FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
City of Port Townsend Drinking Water Taste and Odor Complaints
1. After receiving taste and odor complaints, the Port Townsend water department collected
water quality samples from Lords Lake and City Lake, which supply water to the City's
drinking water system.
2. The tests indicated the presence of various types of algae and other organisms, including
one (blue-green algae) that can release toxins under certain circumstances.
3. The City notified the State and County Health Departments.
4. Working with the State Department of Health, the City tested the water for toxins, both in
the lake and in the drinking water.
5. The City worked with Jefferson County Department of Emergency Management as well
as State and County Health officials to develop a response plan in the event there was a
problem based upon the tested water.
6. Test results from the lakes and the drinking water have shown no presence of algal
toxins.
7. The City will continue to monitor for algae and algal toxins in Lords Lake and City Lake
and in the drinking water until such time as the tests show that the algae blooms have
dissipated.
8. If you have questions about the water call 379-5001.
