RESOLUTION NO. 16-002
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND,
WASHINGTON EXPRESSING THE CITY COUNCIL'S SUPPORT FOR THE PORT
TOWNSEND SCHOOL DISTRICT#50'S PROPOSITION 1, A BOND MEASURE TO
CONSTRUCT AND IMPROVE SCHOOLS
WHEREAS, the Port Townsend School District#50 ("School District")has proposed a
bond measure to replace the Grant Elementary School, and to make safety, security, and ADA
improvements at Port Townsend High School, which measure is to be voted on by the residents
of the School District at the February 9, 2016 Special Election; and
WHEREAS, the bond measure would replace a 60-year old elementary School Building,
allow consolidation of students in grades Pre-K through 5 at one facility, and provide for needed
improvements that will extend the useful life of the high school; and,
WHEREAS, the School District estimates that the proposed measure would cost the
taxpayers a total of$1.24 per$1,000 of assessed value for a period of 20 years beginning in
2017, which is an increase of 70 cents per $1,000 of assessed value over the current rate for the
capital levy that expires in 2016; and,
WHEREAS, Council concludes that supporting the School District's proposal is
consistent with Objectives 1 and 4 of the City's 3-year Strategic Plan for the City, in that
improvement of educational facilities within the City is a community investment that supports
young families with children and provides needed job training and education for the future local
work force, all of which contribute to the resiliency and economic vitality of the City and the
region.
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Port
Townsend as follows:
The City Council expresses its collective support for the School District's Proposition 1
being submitted to the voters at the February 9, 2016 Special Election.
ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Port Townsend at a special meeting
thereof, held this 11th day of January, 2016.
