I have been a part of the Port Townsend community as a minister since August 1984. I have
served on the Jefferson County DD Advisory Board since 1997, worked with the Jefferson
County Winter Shelter for 9 of its 10 years (been co-chair of COAST for last 5 seasons), have
been a community chaplain for most of the time I have lived here, and served on other
committees and engaged in formal discussions relative to many community issue.
As I see young families struggle, I see the need for more housing to be created that is
affordable for these families. Many have rents higher than my mortgage. Along with this is
the need to draw family wage jobs to support our citizens trying to make a life for themselves.
Also, having been greatly involved with the last 9 years of our Emergency Winter Shelter, I see
the need for creativity in housing possibilities to bring stability to the lives of our guests. Our
recent point in time count reveals a much higher need than has been revealed before. I have
read of solutions being tried in Olympia, WA (Quixote Village) and another program in Eugene
Oregon of establishing small houses on land with shared areas for laundry, cooking, and
dining that seem to be working well. I would like to see this explored more as a possibility for
our area.
Thank you,
Carl Hanson
