City of Port Townsend recognized for its support of LGBTQ Equality
The City of Port Townsend is proud to have received a score of 85 out of 100 points on the
Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index.
The Human Rights Campaign is a civil rights organization working to achieve Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer("LGBTQ") equality. The Municipal Equality Index ("MEI")
examines the laws,policies, and services of municipalities and rates them on the basis of their
inclusivity of LGBTQ people who live and work there.
While cities may be selected by the Campaign for evaluation, cities may also self-refer. In late
2015, Emelia De Souza, Jason Serinus, and other members of the Human Rights Alliance North
Sound, asked the City Council to consider submitting the City for inclusion on the MEI. They
provided a draft worksheet as part of their presentation. Council directed staff to build on this
worksheet, and to work with the Campaign.
Mayor Deborah Stinson said, "I am very pleased with this result, and believe that our score on
this index reflects our City's values."
Councilmember Michelle Sandoval said, "I'm proud that our citizens brought this to our
attention and that the City already had policies in place."
City Manager David Timmons said, "When our citizens brought this to Council's attention we
were proud to see that the City's policies and practices support LGBTQ equality. We look
forward to working with our citizens and staff to ensure that all of our citizens are treated fairly
and equitably."
